Pai Gow is the casino game which name can be literally translated as “make nine”. It has the Chinese roots and the story of inventing this gamble comes to the ancient times and originally has been played with the help of Chinese domino tile sets.

The Chinese term p’ai means cards and dominoes at the same time, because of the cultural peculiarities in ancient China there is no any significant difference between these two games. At the time of early Chinese dynasties dominoes were used more as the modern cards, they were packed and treated at the same way.

There are two different ancient games yu-p’u and yeh-tza, which can become the ancestors of the nowadays version of Pai Gow. The experts have different opinions according to this problem. In such a way some of them declare both games have been the card poker games, but the other group of scientists considers yu-p’u is close to modern poker dice or something alike, while the yeh-tza game can be really the card game, because its name originally means leaves. And the version of usage leaves as cards doesn’t seem to be fantastic.

In the course of time with the development of industry and manufacture Ku P’ai changed its look and became the domino game. But the fact is that domino is just the pair of dice placed side by side. Later Chinese dominoes converted into several different games with the same root.

Today Pai Gow has much in common with the modern card games and is played at the same manner. But instead of cards the gamers use domino tiles. It also has some common features with poker and you will learn to play it easily. This ancient Chinese game is pretty simple for understanding and doesn’t need any special skills.

The fame and wide popularity Pai Gow has got in America, when at the modern version of the gamble traditional Chinese dominos were replaced by cards and Pai Gow Poker has appeared. Today you have the perfect opportunity to try this game almost at any casino.

The peculiarity of Pai Gow Poker is the combination of basic poker cards with the old Chinese strategies. This game is played with 53-card deck (with 1 Joker) and each of the gamblers get 7 cards.

The aim of the game is to arrange these seven cards into the best 5-card and 2-card hands, the necessary condition is 5-card hand should have the higher value than the 2-card hand. In order to win the game your 5-card hand must beat the dealer’s 5-card hand and your 2-card hand must beat the dealer’s correspondingly. The winning combination pays 1 to 1.

Best Rated Book regarding Omaha Poker

Overview

‘How to Win at Omaha High-Low Poker’ by Mike Cappelletti is highly rated high low Omaha poker book. It is very popular among poker players both beginners and advanced players. It is really the best strategy guide that was every written for Omaha 8.

Book Structure

’How to Win at Omaha High-Low Poker’ has about 230 pages, 11 chapters. Its author provides enough charts for better readers understanding. It was a good author’s idea to include them in the book.

Unique Advantages

One of the unique advantages of Cappelletti’s book is the beginning of the book is dedicated to starting hands, one of the most important things poker players should be well aware about. It is not the first work written by Cappelletti. In this exactly work the author goes into more details concerning Omaha and I absolutely agree with him.

Disadvantages

To my mind the reader feels uncomfortable and confused is chapter dedicated to math. I guess, the math is extra here. What I think should be really great is just an ordinary way of calculating of hitting a high, low, or scooping against a random hand. As a Hold’em player, if I have 8 outs once I’m going to make my hand about 17% of the time.

Summary

To conclude, this book is similar to many other that describe poker playing. The author did not include anything that make reader believe that Omaha poker game is one of the most popular and fantastic game. This work lacks of zest. I am not sure that every reader who have dedicated to play poker would use strategies presented by the author. However, it would be wrong if I do not say that some of the strategies are quite good.

Omaha Hi-Lo Poker Book Overviews

Nice Book, good content, great playing ideas

Martin Gregory

Mike Cappelletti is a brilliant author who wrote his famous book Omaha hi-lo poker.

The author of the book tried to concentrate mostly on playing Hi/Lo playing. He tried to write his book in plain language, so that every reader understand how to play poker successfully. Having read this book, I kept my Omaha 8 adventures profitable.
The Cappelletti’s paragraphs cover sound advice cocerning playing high flops. The paragraphs inlcude (Cappalletti’s Number):

This Omaha hi-lo poker edition has the following flaws:

1: Omaha 8 poker game is a starting hand game, so the author should have included more details concerning starting hands, because it is really important. The author provides similar information about starting hands as other authors who wrote about poker game.

So, I can say that I have not found something new here. Though, I fully agree that playing A2XX when XX are crap is fairly loose by the standards.

2: Cappellette does not give a full description of hi-limit, pot-limit and other tough Omaha venues. Though, I believe, there are quite many interesting moments, but still I have to say one more time that more details concerning hi-limit, pot-limit playing should be definitely included.

3: The author of Hi/Lo Gamers Review of ‘How to Win at Omaha High-Low Poker’ states that Omaha 8 is a funny game, but I disagree.

I don’t see that Omaha 8 is popular, I believe that it is not popular at all and soon we will forget about this game. Let us imagine the one table of O8 and everyone wins. But people who are playing on weekends seeing the flop average can get as low as 4 or even 3.5. The ideal of a good table like Cappelletti sees it, usually consists of loose enough players to meet his ideal of a good table.

Winner’s view

Steven Bolton

Is it good enough to read Hi/Lo Gamers Review of ‘How to Win at Omaha High-Low Poker’ and start winning?

I started to win while playing poker because I followed the guideline described in the book. Besides, I’m pretty much sure that you can become a winner too, if you read and follow Cappelletti’s advice. I fully agree with the flaws (a) somewhat disorganized, (b) too much print about “other forms” of poker, and (c) leaves some common playing decisions unanswered are also described by the author and he is quite right. However, I believe that there is a sound advice that allows everyone to start winning.

This book makes you analyze, but a little short on reliable information

Robby Smith

Do you want to learn to analyze your poker game? Then the book written by Zee is for you. I was interested in Stud/8 that is why I bought it. However while reading the Omaha/8 hi/lo split, I decided to learn it first. I really wanted to move to the next level in my playing and I really did.

In comparison with other books and articles concerning Omaha hi/lo split I have to confess, that they are focused on strategy more than describing specific hands.

If to compare two halves of Stud/8 half (section concentrated on seven card stud) and the Omaha/8 half, I have to make a conclusion that the first half is more comprehensive than the second one. To my mind, advanced players would be quite interesting in reading this fantastic written texts, however, a beginner should read the book too. I guess, every poker player should get it and read it absolutely.

The ‘High-Low-Split Poker, Seven-Card Stud and Omaha Eight-or-better for Advanced Players’ by Ray Zee has a very helpful section full of different questions and answers might be very amazing for poker players. The author was quite right when he decided to include this helpful section in the book, especially when you have just started playing poker and you do not types of hands or main concepts. One of the biggest disadvantages is lack of basic information. It was a big surprise for me to find out that it is generally focused on (Sklansky’s Theory of Poker et al), few words about probability math and pot odds. If you do not know this, then it would be hard to understand whether to make a call/bet worthwhile. So, definitely this is a big disadvantage.
Maybe, it would be quite necessary to add more concrete examples of playing Omaha/8. Though, if you start playing Stud/8 or Omaha/8, or you are an intermediate player, Zee’s literature should take special place in yoru home library. Though, it would not be a surprise for you but probably you already know that poker is not a very easy game to play. Sometimes, it is hard to follow along with sample hands. Knowing this, Zee wrote his thoughts in as simple as possible manner.

I also would like to give you an advice and read a Ciaffone’s thoughts and ideas about Omaha/8 poker game. It is worth reading for sure, if you are interested in becoming a professional in poker.Actually, you can read the Tenner and Krieger’s special edition. There is also another one writer named Cappeletti’s wrote about Omaha/8 poker Omaha hi/lo split, maybe not the best content, but should be read though. There are quite many poker literature and I advice you to read them all in order to become a professional poker player.
